InstructionsThis webpage provides access to an online tool which converts a flatfile hierarchical list that has been pasted into the 'Input List' box to a TAB-delimited list. Its useful for anyone creating or modifying a Lightroom keyword list, controlled vocabulary or thesaurus that has been stored in a flat-file format.
It starts with a two-stage error-check to locate the following common tab-indented list errors:
It will then perform a case-insensitive sort on the error-free list and display the sorted list in the 'Sorted List' box.
Important NotesPlease be PATIENT when processing large lists, and give the tool a chance to complete its work.
The 'Delete Duplicate Lines' tool will only remove the errors from the 'Sorted List' box, but NOT from the 'Input List' box. These errors will re-appear if more processing is done, but as these errors are flagged-up last of all, after any other errors have been removed, this shouldn't cause a problem.
If no list has been pasted into the 'Input List' box, an error-free test list is displayed. There is also a test list with a range of errors, that is useful to check error-trapping. Click 'Clear All' to clear the lists.
An extra feature has been added to split up large lists - this is very useful for Lightroom, which has problems if a keyword list has a branch with more than about 1600 entries in it. To use this feature, set the 'Divide one level of entries alphabetically' radio button to 'Yes', and choose which level of indentation you wish to use it on with the adjacent drop-down selector. Click the 'Sort Input List' button to see the results. The A-Z divisions have been enclosed within square brackets, and thus will act as Categories in a Lightroom keyword list, and won't get exported with your other keywords.
If you would like to see what the sorted list will look like when it is loaded into your image processor, Digital Asset Management program or image library, see the Tab-Delimited List Visualization Tool. To sort and error-check a list that is already converted to the tab-delimited format, see the Tab-Delimited List Sorting Tool. More free tab-indented list tools can be found in the Tab-Indented Tools Introduction page.
